National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines
Through a single toll-free number, 1-800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669), the National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines allows callers from anywhere in the United States to easily access the Quitline in their home state.
Recognizing the strength of the addiction, the Quitlines provide individualized counseling, general information about tobacco use and the benefits to quitting and self-help materials. Services vary from state to state and most materials are available online. Quitlines also provide help to friends, relatives and other members of the tobacco users’ support team. There are special services for teens and pregnant smokers. Many offer services and information in languages other than English and can take calls from the deaf or hard of hearing.
When you call the toll-free number, you will be automatically routed, by area code, to your free state Quitline where you can find out more about the tools and resources they offer. Or, you can visit www.naQuitline.org where you will find the World Quitline Map, with a detailed list of each Quitline’s service offerings.
Become an Ex
A public health campaign and free smoking cessation program, created by an alliance of national organizations and state health agencies, called EX®, changes the way smokers think about the difficult process of quitting.
The online program encourages smokers to approach quitting smoking as “re-learning life without cigarettes.” EX® provides smokers with information that can help them prepare for a quit attempt by providing a way to “relearn:”
- your thinking on the behavioral aspects of smoking and how different smoking triggers can be overcome with practice and preparation
- your knowledge of addiction and how medications can increase your chances for quitting success
- your ideas of how support from friends and family members can play a critical role in quitting
The BecomeAnEX.org web site brings the “re-learn” idea to life, offering action-oriented content and videos to help smokers re-learn all aspects of their smoking addiction. The site helps users develop a personalized quit plan that includes medication and support, plus it gives them an opportunity to practice breaking the “glue” between cigarettes and their associated triggers, before they actually stop smoking.
